Mental Health Overview

Research demonstrates that students who receive social-emotional and mental health support achieve better academically.  School environment, classroom conduct, academic motivation, and students’ sense of awareness and welfare all improve as well which is why Hayward Twin Oaks Montessori has developed the Mental Health Department.

The mission of the Mental Health Department is to promote healthy social, emotional, and behavioral development of students and have a positive impact on their academic achievements. The department is led and supervised by the director, Melanie Carlton, and includes a broad spectrum of services including group and individual counseling with licensed clinicians, the school psychologist, and pre-licensed clinicians who are clinically supervised by the director of mental health in accordance with state regulations. Students also receive wellness check-ins, social emotional learning in the classroom, prevention and intervention, consultation, and referral services to promote good mental health, help students achieve academic success, and have access to experiences that build social skills, leadership, and self-awareness.
